Beach and Coastal Resorts Risks

(Leader: CERU ; Partners: CEPRIS, I-CoD)

This project aims to develop and implement seismic, tsunami and coastal risks mitigation. In particular the project intends to contribute for a Tsunami Ready Community working on two programs: a Tsunami Ready Beach (TRB) and a Tsunami Ready Hotel (TRH). Besides, the project also intends to address other risks present on the beach. All involved countries have a large coastal area which beaches are a holiday destination par excellence, and tourists are one of the most vulnerable groups concerning these risks. All the actions to be developed will be done in close collaboration with the local associations and authorities.
Main objectives are to involve the local population, associations and authorities on seismic, tsunami and other beach risks divulgation and on the implementation of mitigation measures, and to produce informative documentation on beach risks, including mitigation measures, in several languages (English, Portuguese, Arabic, French, Italian?).

OBJECTIVES

TASKS

Awareness of tsunami and beach risks among hotels responsible and beach concessions

Awareness of local associations and responsible for safety on the beaches (Maritime Authority and lifeguards) to disseminating information among residents and floating population (tourist)

Awareness of Tourist Guides and personnel at Tourism Offices

Awareness of local and national authorities to implement preventive measures

Discuss with the Foundation for Environmental Education the integration of all coastal hazards, and particularly tsunamis, on their program for “Blue Flag” as applied to beaches. This can be done by expanding the article 31 of the criteria

Promoting formative seminars, short-courses or programs in disaster risk mitigation for local associations and tourism professionals

Involvement of the local population, associations and authorities on seismic, tsunami and other beach risks divulgation and on the implementation of mitigation measures

Production and distribution of informative/educational products like posters and leaflets

2018

WP 1		Holding of seminars addressed to different associations and tourism professionals on risk culture, risk mitigation and risk dissemination

WP 2		Implementation tsunami warning and evacuation signs in several beaches in the south of Portugal

WP 3		Informative sessions for general public on the interpretation of risks signs displayed on beaches. Proposal for complementary signs for risks not yet considered

2019

WP 1		Study on the implementation of evacuation routes on Porto de Mós beach (in Lagos)

WP 2		Beach evacuation exercise in Cascais

WP 3		Study on informative posters and leaflets addressing different risks for different target public

WP 4		Holding project final seminar to present and discuss the results achieved by the different partners

Expected results

Producing informative leaflets
Publication of informative documentation on beach risks including mitigation measures (in English and Portuguese)
