Tsunami tank alert system

Within the scope of its outreach activities, CERU developed, in collaboration with the Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL), a tsunami early warning system that was installed in the IDL tsunami tank. The design and realization of the prototype, as well as its installation, were carried out by Luis Matias, member of CERU and researcher at IDL.

Final seminar of the BEACHRISKS project

On the 12th and 13th of September, took place the final seminar of the BEACHRISKS project held in collaboration with the Municipality of Lagos. It was attended by representatives from EUR-OPA partner centers, CEPRIS (Morocco) and ICoD (Malta), as well as by several technicians that presented different communications. The final conclusions and recommendations of the project were discussed, and the 2 leaflets made by CERU on Risks on the Beach and Coastal Zones were presented (see in “Projects")

ITINERANT EXHIBITION - EVOCATION OF THE 28th FEBRUARY 1969 EARTHQUAKE

CERU organized, in collaboration with the Portuguese Society for Seismic Engineering (SPES), an itinerant exhibition related to the news that appeared in the press at that time. The exhibition has been shown in several Portuguese municipalities and is authored by Luis Matias, member of CERU, professor at FCUL – IDL (University of Lisbon). He had the collaboration of several people and institutions.

Seismic Risk in Portugal - Public session. Lagos 28 February 2019

The Municipality Lagos, together with SPES and APMG, held a public session on "The Seismic Risk in Portugal" in Paços de Concelho Séc. XXI century. Exhibitions on the seismic and tsunami risk in Lagos (CML – CERU partnership) and on the activities developed by several institutions working on these themes were displayed. CERU presented a poster on its activities.

Ilumiano association seminar

Invited talk given by Luis Matias, from CERU’s Direction, on a seminar promoted by Ilumiano association and the Portuguese Seismic Engineering Society (SPES) that took place in Ponte de Lima (Portugal) on January 26th, 2019. The theme of the seminar was “If Portugal shakes again?” (official language was Portuguese).

8th International Conference on Building Resilience (Lisbon, November 2018)

CERU was associated partner of the 8ICBR - 8th International Conference on Building Resilience that took place in Lisbon on 14 to 16 November 2018. Manuel João RIbeiro, CERU's Vice-President, presented a communication entitled "Regulatory mechanisms in intergovernmental relations and citizenship in risk governance in Portugal”.

Participation in the seminar “Tsunami Risk” held in Cascais on October 27th, 2018, organized by the CERU and Cascais municipality. Luis Matias presented a communication entitled “Tsunami Hazard in Portugal” (in Portuguese)

Malta workshop on Beach and Coastal Resorts Risks

The workshop that was held in St Julians (Malta), on 24-25 September 2018, was organized by ICoD, CERU’s partner in the BEACHRISKS project. Luis Matias prepared a communication entitled “Lagos (Portugal): Towards a Tsunami Ready Community”

Seismological Box - Project for kindergarten children

The "Seismological Box" educational project, involving children of pre-school education and developed within the scope of the project Safety in School and in the Community, won the International Science in School competition promoted by the Ilídio Pinho Foundation (Ilídio Pinho Prize). Luís Matias participated in its elaboration that was supported by CERU.

Seminar on the building stock seismic rehabilitation - Lisbon

National campaign on Prevention of Drowning – Neptune Serenity

The national campaign "Wall of Drowning Prevention", carried out by Neptune Serenity - Association of Prevention of Drowning, was supported by several institutions (ISN, INCM, CERU and DGESTE). It was addressed to all children, adolescents, youth and adults in educational institutions and other organizations in Portugal.

Tsunami Prevention Workshop - Lagos

As part of the BAYWATCH project, CERU organized a workshop on tsunami risk prevention for hotel managers, tourist agents and concessionaires on beaches, in Lagos 3-4 April 2017. Several national and foreign experts (from Puerto Rico, Morocco, Italy and Malta) and Civil Protection technicians from different municipalities attended the workshop. The Lagos City Council hosted the workshop and partially supported it.

International Conference on Risks, Security and Citizenship (ICRSC) - Setúbal

The CERU promoted and supported the presentation of a communication on the Evaluation of tsunami signaling that is installed in Praia da Batata, in Lagos, on the ICRSC hat was held in Setúbal, 30-31 March 2017.

Exhibition "Risks - learn and avoid" - Setúbal

The CERU partially supported and followed all the phases of design and development of the exhibition "Risks - Learn and Avoid", inaugurated during the International Conference on Risks, Security and Citizenship - Setúbal, March 2017. The exhibition was held in several locations of the Setúbal municipality, between 30 March 2017 and 30 March 2018. Luis Matias coordinated the scientific part that was performed with the contribution of several private, state and university institutions.

10th Symposium on Meteorology and Geophysics (APMG2017) - Lisbon

An oral communication was presented at the 10º Simpósio de Meteorologia e Geofísica - APMG2017, that took place in Lisbon (20-22 March), on the use of non-invasive methods in land characterization. The CERU partially supported and collaborated in the field work.

ICUR2016

The CERU organized the first International Conference on Urban Risks - ICUR2016, which took place in Lisbon on 30 June to 2 July 2016. It was a bilingual conference (Portuguese and English) with about 160 participants of 17 countries. There were 4 plenary conferences made by recognized international experts. On the last day, four technical visits were carried out.

International Conference on Cultural Heritage - Lisbon

An invited communication on seismic risk mitigation projects in urban areas developed by CERU was presented at the International Conference "Cultural Heritage: Disaster Prevention, Response and Recovery" held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon, on 3-4 November 2016.

6th International Disaster Risk Conference - Davos 2016

The President of CERU, Paula Teves Costa attended the 6th International Disaster Risk Conference "Integrative Risk Management - towards resilient cities", held in Davos (Switzerland) from August 28 to September 1, 2016. In particular, CERU participated in the workshop on "Awareness Raising, Education and Training - Capacity Building in Integrative Risk Management".

Civil Protection Week - Cascais 2016

Moderation of the final debate of the Seminar on "Prevention under the Municipal System of Civil Protection". This seminar took place on March 4th, 2016, in the Cascais Shopping, and was integrated in the activities developed by the Civil Protection Department and promoted by the Municipal Council of Cascais.

European project Pop Alert – Lisbon exercise

The CERU was invited to participate in the exercise of the European project Pop Alert, as specialist. The exercise was held in Lisbon on 5 February 2016.
