Manuel João Riberio, Vice-President of CERU, is the guest on Público’s P24 podcast

Civil Protection focuses more on rescue efforts than on risk prevention | P24 Podcast | PÚBLICO

The Prime Minister visited Pombal yesterday to assess the damage caused by Storm Kristin at two companies; he rejected criticism of the state’s response to this emergency and announced the suspension of tolls on four motorways in the affected areas.

Criticism of the actions of various government bodies is directed, above all, at the Minister for Internal Administration and is already being voiced within the PSD itself.

Kristin has passed and Storm Leonardo has arrived. The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority has warned of the possibility of flooding in urban areas, river flooding, landslides and accidents in coastal areas until Thursday, due to Storm Leonardo passing over mainland Portugal.

The Algarve, Alentejo and Lisbon are the regions where the impact of rain and wind is expected to be greatest. The GNR and Civil Protection recommend preparing a 72-hour emergency kit and avoiding unnecessary travel in coastal or wooded areas.

Manuel João Ribeiro, a lecturer at ISEC and researcher at Iscte, and former president and vice-president of the National Fire and Civil Protection Service, is today’s guest.

In this episode, Manuel João Ribeiro says there is a lack of a culture of prevention and advocates for better coordination between municipal and national civil protection plans.
